Information regarding the extreme heat warning covering Decatur County.
Decatur County is under an extreme heat warning until Thursday, July 2 at 7 PM per the National Weather Service. High temperatures are expected to reach the 90s with heat indices of 105 to 110.
Cooling centers are available at the Decatur County Health Department and Greensburg - Decatur County Public Library.
The library is located at 1110 E Main St, Greensburg, IN. Their cooling center will operate during the following hours:
9 AM to 8 PM, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday
9 AM to 6 PM, Wednesday
9 AM to 5 PM, Friday
9 AM to 1 PM, Saturday
CLOSED, Sunday
The Decatur County Health Department is located at 315 S Ireland St, Greensburg, IN. Their cooling center will operate during the following hours: Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM.
Pregnant people, elderly people, newborns, children and people who have chronic illnesses are more vulnerable to extreme heat. Know the signs of heat stroke: a core body temperature of 104 degrees Fahrenheit, changes in behavior or mental state, changes in sweating pattern - e.g. skin that feels hot and dry to the touch or, if brought on by strenuous exercise, profuse sweating, nausea or vomiting, flushed skin, rapid breathing, racing heart, headache. If you or someone you know is showing these symptoms get indoors, remove excess clothing and cool off using whatever is available - a cool tub of water, cool water from a garden hose, fan and misting cool water, ice packs or cold wet towels placed on one's head, neck, armpits and groin.
