Staying Safe During Heat Advisory

Noelle Maxwell

All of Indiana is currently under a heat advisory, according to reporting from WISHTV, with high temperatures forecast in the 90s and heat indices expected to reach 105 degrees in some areas.

Pregnant people, elderly people, newborns, children or people who have chronic illnesses are the most vulnerable to extreme heat – check on neighbors and family who may be vulnerable.

Heat stroke symptoms include: a core body temperature of 104 degrees Fahrenheit, changes in behavior or mental state, changes in sweating pattern - e.g. skin that feels hot and dry to the touch or, if brought on by strenuous exercise, profuse sweating, nausea or vomiting, flushed skin, rapid breathing, racing heart, headache. If you or someone you know is showing these symptoms get indoors, remove excess clothing and cool off using whatever is available - a cool tub of water, cool water from a garden hose, fan and misting cool water, ice packs or cold wet towels placed on one's head, neck, armpits and groin. Staying hydrated and drinking beverages with electrolytes if needed and wearing light-colored, loose-fitting, lightweight clothing are ways to stay safe. If spending time outdoors, apply SPF 30 (or higher) sunscreen every two hours and take regular breaks in the shade.
