Weekly Round-Up, October 2, 2026
Articles you might've missed, information about upcoming community events and a schedule with agendas and livestream links for city and county meetings.
In Case You Missed It
So - if you've been following the Independent for a while, you probably saw our announcement last week that we're making some changes to our format and publishing schedule. If you don't remember or missed it, you can catch up here. In a nutshell, we're pivoting to publishing articles multiple times a week with a newsletter at the end of the week gathering links and recapping the week's news for subscribers on the free plan. This is our first "issue" of the weekly round-up and we hope you find it informative or useful.
First up, the Decatur County Commissioners approved a short-term data center moratorium at their September 21 meeting. The moratorium is county ordinance 2026-15 and the full text as read at the meeting can be viewed in the article. Here's what you need to know:
- The moratorium is currently effective from September 21, 2026 until December 31, 2026. If the Decatur County Comprehensive Plan isn't finalized by December 31, 2026, the moratorium could be extended.
- This moratorium only applies to county-owned land. It does not apply to land owned by the City of Greensburg, including land previously owned by Decatur County that was annexed onto the City of Greensburg.
- The moratorium is designed to prevent hyperscale data centers - defined as data centers at or above 250 megawatts - from being constructed until the comprehensive plan is complete.

The Greensburg-Decatur County Public Library will be hosting a Banned Book Read-In-Walk-Out event on Monday, October 5. We caught up with Karen Lane, GDCPL Public Services Assistant, to learn more about the event, which highlights the harms of censorship. Read the full article here and if you'd like to register for the walk-out, you can do so via the library's website.
Our "Meet the Candidates" series has continued with two profiles being published this past week highlighting Decatur County Sheriff candidate Bill Meyerrose (R, incumbent) and Decatur County Council District 4 candidate Kevin Gay (D).
Are you registered to vote? The deadline to register for the November 3 general election is Monday, October 5. Check your registration status at indianavoters.in.gov.
We've lifted the paywall on August's local business spotlight highlighting Dog-Eared Pages. If you didn't read it when we first published it, there's no time like the present!
Our latest local business spotlight highlights Creekside Farm Stop, the store formerly known as Hillbilly Corner, which has come under new ownership. (If you loved their ice cream, they've kept that!) This article is paywalled until November.
Do you know of a local business that deserves some time in the spotlight?
