Pet Pit Stops Provide Resources
Greensburg Girl Scout Elizabeth Walden wanted to help pet owners in need. For her Gold Award project, she built two Pet Pit Stops. “The main purpose for these boxes,” she explained via email, “is to provide a way to reduce the amount of pets surrendered to the animal shelter because their owner didn’t have the means to provide until their next paycheck,” or became unemployed or for any reason couldn’t afford basic supplies.
The two Pet Pit Stops are at the Greensburg-Decatur County Public Library, 1110 East Main Street and the Decatur County Health Department, 315 South Ireland Street. Pet Pit Stops work like a Free Little Library or Free Little Pantry – people who need something for their pets can take what they need and anyone in the community can donate an item. Walden said her goal is to “keep as many animals with their families as I can,” and she wanted the Pit Stops to be accessible to anyone who needs them, while also accessible to anyone who might want to help someone in the community but doesn’t have an avenue to do so.
Walden wanted her Gold Award project – which is Girl Scouts’ equivalent to an Eagle Scout award – to be hands-on and meaningful to the community. “By building the Pet Pit Stops,” she explained, “I could make an impact and put my own spin on them! Also, I can ensure the quality of the boxes, since I handmade them. I also hope to raise awareness [of] this problem in the community and hopefully inspire others to take action to support their neighbors.” Walden built three boxes, however the location of the third box is yet to be chosen – she also noted she’s excited “to see the impact I can make,” and wanted to thank everyone who supported the project and made it possible.
